Banana Jam Cafe Review
I’m not going to preach about how fantastic Caribbean cuisine is at Banana Jam (which it is), I’m going to preach about how awesome the entire experience at this restaurant is. For a good few years, Banana Jam has been one of my fail-safe spots to meet up with friends, colleagues, family and most other forms of relations. You always know that the vibe will be good there, you always know that the food will be amazing and you always know that you will leave feeling satisfied. This place deserves some recognition.
The menu at Banana Jam hasn’t changed much over the past few years since it’s been open, but then again, it doesn’t need to. Starters almost always consist of a beer or cocktail and a serving of their Coco Loco Hoppin’ Jons (or Chilli Poppers in layman terms) which always goes down well. Sharing is the word to play here and whenever I’m with a large group of people at Banana Jam, dishes such as the Hoppin’ Jons, Mo’Bay Mushrooms, Roadside Jerk Wings and the Caribbean Platter are generally shared with ease.
The main menu is varied and exciting. Although a pizza may not be the most original choice to order at a Caribbean restaurant, I somehow always end up ordering the Cuban Pizza (chorizo, peppedews and feta, which I add olives and avo to as extras). It never disappoints. Another one of my favourites is the Fat Rasta Pizza (roasted peppers, aubergine, spinach, garlic and feta) and when lathered with garlic and Tabasco sauce, it’s a winner.
As if I didn’t punt the food enough, the vibe here is definitely punt-worthy. The island-themed outside area here is usually filled with tables of the 20-something age demographic, all immersed in group conversation over drinks. The music consists of a mix of reggae, ska, reggaeton and some dancehall, played at a reasonable foot-tapping volume.
Below is a song which is often played here, which should give you an impression about what I mean when I say awesome island vibe:
Unless someone can prove me better, Banana Jam Cafe is the treasure of Kenilworth.
