Mavericks Strip Club Protest

“The sex trade fuels HIV”, “Mavericks promote adultery” and “Women are not sex objects” are just some of the messages the seemingly altruistic protesters who gathered outside the elite gentlemen’s club promoted.
It was a very short and quiet protest yesterday around 11am , except for some noise that came out of a bagpipe played by a man in traditional Scottish attire. Hopefully this is only the start of  many protest againts Mavericks.
I believe women should empower themselves, not take off their clothes to entertain men.

Firstly, and most importantly; To refer to Mavericks dancers as sex trafficked individuals without research and facts to back these allegations up is extremelly ignorant. My wife is a Mavericks dancer, we know most of the Mavericks dancers personally, and I assure you that none of those girls are doing what they are doing against their will. Indeed most of them are a lot more succesful, both financially and personally, than most of the ignorant few that seem to believe that the Mavericks girls are somehow being forced to work against their will. I feel that instead of judgeing people for their careers we need to be more cognisent of the diversity representitive across our democracy, and stop crying foul if we have a moral issue with regards to something. Rather lets spend our time and effort purging our Country of the actual criminals for example the countless escorts boldly advertising there services on the web and in our newspapers. Escorting (sex for money) is illegal and is an unregulated industry. If anything the actual sex/human trafficking is taking place in this sector and NOT at a succesfull strip club in Cape Town, a walking distance from the home affairs offices I might add.

Secondly….. Sex trafficking refers to women or men being trafficked for the act of sex for money…. Stripping is not sex….. Stripping is not illegal….. So please stop refering to Mavericks girls as girls being sex trafficked… I am respectfull that certain individuals feel that stripping may lead to adultry. In turn they should be respectful that not all Religions, cultures ect are of the same viewpoint. Diversity people, diversity……. So perhaps instead of picketing outside a succesful business they should in actual fact rather go for diversity training somewhere.

    Hi Timothy,

Thank you for the comment. You have raised some very valid points about the adult industry in our country and general stereotyping about it.

We certainly do recognize that there are always two sides to every story and wish to clarify that the article was written as an opinion piece by one of our contributors. We, as a collective group of writers, often will publish our thoughts and opinions on various topics relevant to Cape Town. The nature of the protest was bound to raise eyebrows and CityLifer took the opportunity to publish this largely-unpublicized event for its readers to have their own say.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts here.

    Regards,
Justin Williams – Founder of CityLifer Cape Town

Actually according to section 11 of the Sexual Offences Amendment Act 2007 paying for a lap dance ( see definition of sexual act) is illegal and therefore Mavericks is conducting an illegal business. If you look at the Mavericks website they also offer escorting services. Definitely worthy of further investigation. I also think one should stop sanitising what is very much part of the sex trade as the ‘adult industry”.
