If you could leave a message in a bottle and throw it overboard into the ocean for somebody to eventually find, what would you write? Australian Anne O’Sullivan put a message in a bottle and threw it overboard a year ago, while travelling on a cruise ship near Indonesia. It was found one year later off our coast. Here’s what it said.

“We’re sitting in our balcony pondering. Is it better to love or be loved? Your answer will be appreciated. Call us or write to us.”

South African Fiona Marlton found it floating in shallow water on the Mozambique coast, almost 8,000km away. Fifteen months after throwing the bottle overboard, Anne received a message back from Fiona which read: “I found your bottle. It’s better to be loved. But to be loved you must love.”

The two have exchanged emails and have become good friends since.

At first it was local models Jessica Leandra dos Santos and Tshidi Tshamana who both publically tweeted racist remarks but now it seems that the already-sensitive race situation in our country has taken a nose dive. Ex-president and Nobel prize winner FW De Klerk seems to have pissed off more than a few South Africans last night during his interview on CNN.com’s Amanpour, a talk show with journalist Christiane Amanpour.

During the interview, De Klerk made comments on the show such as :

• “My people whose self determination were taken away by colonial powers in the Anglo-Boer War”
•  ”He was in jail much too long but he was properly tried” (speaking about Mandela)
• “Apartheid wasn’t morally repugnant”
• “Blacks weren’t disenfranchised”

These comments have even begun the Twitter hashtag #stripdeklerkoftheNobelnow! while #DeKlerk and #Amanpour have already started trending. Where to from here?

Enter 13-year old girl, Mallory Kievman, who has apparently invented a cure disguised in the form of a humble lollipop. Called the Hiccupop, this sneaky sucker contains a mix of apple cider vinegar and sugar. Having been a victim of uncontrollable hiccups which begain in 2010, Mallory set out to find a cure for the hiccups – otherwise known as myoclonus of the diaphragm that repeats several times per minute.

Hiccupops have gained traction lately in the media and it looks like the lollipops will eventually become a surefire remedy for a condition that has baffled man since the beginning. Read more about them on their website here.
